Three-dimensional coupling numerical simulation of two-phase flow and electrochemical phenomena in alkaline water electrolysis

Alkaline water electrolysis has the advantage of scalability for industrial-scale mass production hydrogen; however, it is operated under a lower current density than other methods because high overpotential resulting from ion transport limitations will occur at density. Bubble dynamics can both prevent by its existence and accelerate bubble-induced flow. In this study, we conduct three-dimensional coupling numerical simulations two-phase flow electrochemical phenomena to elucidate mechanisms which microscale bubble influence cell overpotential. We find that induced rising microbubbles enhances anode suppresses Moreover, atomization further smaller bubbles approach more closely larger ones surface.
